Wrist Blood Pressure Cuff - What You Need To Know

What do you need to know about a wrist blood pressure cuff? Do you need a replacement? Do you need to know the correct size for you? Do you actually know the correct way to wear one?

What Is A Wrist Blood Pressure Cuff?

It is nothing more than a section of sealed plastic material that inflates around your arm.

By squeezing your arm tightly, the pulse in your brachial artery can be more easily measured, both in frequency (your pulse) and in magnitude (your blood pressure).

Correct Size

Most blood pressure monitors only come with a single size of cuff. Around half of all people who buy one are forced to send it to the manufacturer in return for one that fits better. Luckily, most companies do this free of charge although you usually have to pay postage yourself.

A cuff that is too large or too small will underestimate or overestimate your true blood pressure. Therefore, it's important that you get one that fits you well.

Usually the cuff will come with markings that tell you (when put on) if the cuff is the right fit for you or not. Otherwise, check the instructions that came with the device.

If you have not yet bought a monitor, then make sure to try the cuff on in the store if you can, before you buy.

Correct Positioning

The hose that connects the cuff to the monitor should be positioned correctly if you want accurate readings.

Remember, your blood pressure is being monitored from your brachial artery. If you lay down your arm on a table with palm facing upwards then the artery runs through the top of your exposed arm (the inside of the arm and elbow).

Make sure that the hose is also situated in line with the artery i.e. on top of the arm when it is in the position described above.
