Blood Pressure Kits

Blood pressure kits are an essential for every household and not just every doctor's office. Without one of these, how do you know that you are healthy? With one, you get an instant answer on whether your blood pressure is at a healthy level or whether it is increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovacsular diseases.

What Is A Blood Pressure Kit?

This is another name for what other people call a blood pressure monitor. Either way, it's a device that measures your blood pressure.

In the old days, the only way to get your blood pressure checked was to go to your doctor. He would use a stethoscope and a mercury sphygmomanometer for checking your blood pressure. Although this is still an accurate method, with the advent of digital blood pressure monitors it means that anyone can do this themselves and right in the comfort of their own home.

White Coat Syndrome

There are many reasons for monitoring your blood pressure at home yourself.

If you go to the doctor and he checks your blood pressure once, how do you know that it is an accurate reading?

For example, you are supposed to be at rest for several minutes before taking a reading. Having walked to the doctor's office, this alone is enough to give an inaccurate reading.

Another major source of inaccuracy is what people call "white coat syndrome". Before you see a doctor you may not be your usual self and many people have anxieties, even if they are only minor. Unfortunately, this will produce an inaccurate blood pressure reading.

Also, your blood pressure can vary throughout the entire day. Only by taking several readings and taking an average can you obtain useful readings.

How Does A Blood Pressure Kit Work?

In your typical kit you will get a digital monitor which just looks like a small brick, a bit larger than a PDA. You will also get a cuff to wrap around your upper arm. You usually need to attach the cuff, via a hose, to the monitor.

When you are ready, simply turn on the monitor and it should automatically start to inflate the cuff to maximum pressure. The pressure will then drop and the monitor will detect your pulse and blood pressure and show the readings on the screen.

More advanced models can even be connected to a computer where you can make charts and do further analysis on the data. Whilst such features might appeal to data hounds, most people don't need them and don't forget that all that you really need is simply your blood pressure reading.

Cuff Size

When you buy a kit, most of them allow you to exchange your cuff for a smaller or larger one, free of charge. Some models (like a Braun version that I own myself) actually come with two cuff sizes anyway but this is rare.

What Is A Good Blood Pressure?

The ideal blood pressure is 115/75. If you are higher than this then you have a higher risk of cardiovascular problems.

A lot of people hear that they are at a higher risk and seem to disregard it. For example, someone may discover that they have a blood pressure of 130/90. In some countries, this is defined as "pre-hypertension". Because they are so close to 115/75, they disregard it. It's just a number on a digital screen that is a little away from "normal" so it is not perceived as being a danger, especially because the person feels absolutely fine.

And yet this person has probably a doubled risk of heart attack and stroke if they don't do something very soon to change their blood pressure. Don't be ignorant of your blood pressure reading. Blood pressure kits are a wonderful invention so we should take heed of their warnings.

Best Blood Pressure Kits

These days most of the large electronics manufacturers are also making their own blood pressure kits. Any of them will do.

If you must insist on going with the best brand then I would recommend Omron. They are well know for their blood pressure monitors and specialise in industrial and medical equipment. They have been making blood pressure monitors for many, many years and know the market well.
